“In the inner courtroom of my mind, mine is the only judgment that counts.” ― Nathaniel Branden,

I’m NOT Good Enough! I’m NOT Smart Enough! I DON’T Belong Here!

Have you ever heard voices like that?

Now, I’m not saying you’re hearing voices. It’s more like hearing those kinds of thoughts in your head.

Of course you have. We all have had that negative nonsense going on in our heads. Negative nonsense that holds us back from getting done what needs to be done to succeed.

You know something? I’ve been studying martial arts and human behavior for over 40 years.

Do you know what I’ve found?

I’ve found that nearly everyone one of us has an inner critic.  Negative nonsense that sabotages our success.

You know what the worst part is? Most of the time it does this without us even being aware of what it’s doing.

As a researcher, I’ve found that there are a number of things that add to our inner critic. I go over many of them in my books.

Eddie the Eagle and His Inner Critic

Do you like the movies?

Me too! I wrote about an example of how the inner critic affects us in one of my books, Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives: The Convergence of Mind, Body and Spirit.

It was from a movie that came out a couple of years ago, Eddie the Eagle. Maybe you watched it.

If you didn’t see it, Eddie the Eagle is a true story about a tenacious man, Eddie Edwards. From the very beginning, Eddie’s primary life goal has been to be in the Olympics. Even though he could barely walk when he was a child!

Through dogged work and determination, Eddie qualified to be a part of the Olympic ski team. But, Eddie was a little strange. What I mean is Eddie was a little eccentric. As a result, British Olympic officials didn’t feel they feel he was a “proper” British Olympics representative. So, they kicked him off the team.

Never Give Up!

Eddie decided that even this wasn’t going to hold him back from his dream of being in the Olympics.  So, he decided to become a ski jumper. There were two problems with this. The first was was Britain didn’t have a ski jumping team. The second, and even bigger problem, was Eddie had never ski jumped before.

This led Eddie on an incredible and, through many trials and tribulations, as well as an abundance of bumps and bruises, Eddie qualified to be part of the British Olympic team as their one and only ski jumper.

In qualifying, Eddie only had to jump from 70 meters. After completing his 70-meter jump in the Olympics, Eddie made a last-minute decision to do the 90-meter jump.

But this was another problem.  He’d never jumped from 90-meters before.

This jump is going to be not only an Olympic first but also a personal first.

As we watch, Eddie rides the elevator and eventually reaches the top, seemingly a mile high in the air. Sitting atop the summit that’s as tall as a football field is long, his inner critic starts talking to him.

He hears voices from the past. Voices like his father telling him he would never be an Olympic athlete, or the Olympic official telling him he wasn’t Olympics material.

Those voices froze Eddie in place.
